Residential Installation of Orange County Wine Cellar Refrigeration Unit

Written by

Wines are one of those rare commodities that require a consistent and stable environment, in order to preserve and improve their quality over time.  Wine cellars are specially designed to provide the best climate conditions for storing and aging wines.  To maintain the ideal wine storage temperature of 55°F to 58°F, a wine room must be outfitted with insulation and vapor barriers, as well as equipped with the proper wine cellar cooling system.

A wine cellar refrigeration unit is engineered to help stabilize temperature and humidity levels in a wine storage environment.  There are three main categories of climate control systems:  through-the-wall self-contained cooling units, ducted self-contained refrigeration systems, and split systems.  Each make and model has its own unique features, but all are designed to efficiently cool a wine cellar.

To ensure optimum wine cellar climate conditions, it is crucial to have your wine room fitted with the right type of Orange County wine cellar refrigeration system.  There are several factors that should be taken into consideration when deciding on a climate control system, such as size and location of the wine cellar, amount of insulation, ambient conditions, and the number of wine bottles intended for storage.

This recently completed Orange County wine cellar refrigeration replacement project shows the importance of providing your wine cellar with the proper wine cellar cooling system.  This project was serviced by Arctic Metalworks, Southern California’s leading manufacturer and supplier of commercial grade wine cellar refrigeration systems.

Initial inspection of the wine storage space shows that the existing cooling unit, a through-the-wall breeze air style refrigeration unit, is not capable of cooling a large wine cellar (10’ x 6’).  The homeowners also complained that the unit was blowing hot air and noise into their living space.

The Arctic team recommended removing the existing refrigeration equipment and replacing it with one of their wine cellar refrigeration systems, Arctic 0050 ½ HP split system.  A split system wine cooling unit is considered as one of the most efficient cooling option.  This type of climate control system is designed to be unobtrusive and quiet.

A split wine cellar refrigeration unit houses the evaporator coil and the condensing unit separately.  Separating both components allows for flexibility in installation and helps eliminate noise.  The evaporator coil is mounted in the wine cellar, while the condensing unit can be located outdoors or in a well-ventilated adjoining room.

For this refrigeration replacement project, the Arctic team installed the condensing unit outdoors.  The unit sits on a 24 x 24 air conditioning pad.  Arctic Metalworks created a custom-designed sheet metal cover to protect the condensing component of the refrigeration system against the rain and other harmful outside elements.

The Arctic team used refrigerant lines to connect the outdoor unit to the indoor evaporator coil.  Refrigerant lines are a set of tubes or pipes that transport refrigerant through a wine cellar cooling system.  The suction line is responsible for transporting gaseous refrigerant, while a liquid line carries refrigerant in its liquid form.  A drain line is also needed to remove water that is produced during the dehumidification process.

Arctic Metalworks installed a digital room thermostat with backlit display.  Thermostats are control systems that help maintain the correct temperature in a wine room, and at the same time allow wine collectors to regularly monitor the climate conditions inside their wine cellar space.

The entire climate control system runs on 115 volt/ 20 amp electrical receptacles.  After inspecting the refrigeration equipment for leaks, the Arctic team started the system and charged it with R134a, a type of refrigerant that is non-ozone depleting and is completely safe for the environment.

When deciding on a wine cellar refrigeration unit, always consult with a wine cellar refrigeration expert.  They will perform a heat load calculation to determine the best cooling option for your wine enclave.  Professional refrigeration experts will also take into account any constraints in your storage space, as well as your specific preferences to ensure that the cooling unit will suit the conditions of your wine room.

Arctic Metalworks is a family owned and operated multi-division company that designs and builds Orange County wine cellar refrigeration systems for both residential and commercial applications.  The company also specializes in wine cellar construction and renovation, as well as handmade wine racking systems.

The Arctic team has carved out a name for themselves as a leading manufacturer of commercial grade quality climate control systems and providing professional prompt service.  They have a full service team of refrigeration specialists and technicians on standby should your cooling system require maintenance or repair.

Residential Wine Cellar Cooling Installation Aliso Viejo CA – Learn the Importance of Refrigeration Systems

Types of Wine Cellar Refrigeration Systems by ArcticA wine cellar refrigeration system is designed exclusively to help create and maintain a stable and consistent wine cellar environment.  Temperature plays an important role in the maturation process of wines, while the correct humidity level keeps the cork moist and expanded, and thus maintaining its sealing quality.  For optimum wine storage conditions, the temperature must be kept within 50°F and 55°F, with the relative humidity between 60% and 75%.

On the market are three primary categories of wine cellar refrigeration systems: self-contained cooling systems, ductless-split refrigeration units, and ducted-split climate control systems.  These units are available in a range of sizes, configurations, and cooling capacities, that can address the unique specifications and needs of commercial and residential wine cellars.

For optimum cooling performance and efficient operation, a ductless-split refrigeration unit is the best cooling option.  This climate control system uses a line set to connect two separate units; the evaporator unit is installed inside the room and the condensing unit outside.  Separating both components allows the noise-producing condenser to be located remotely, thus reducing the production of noise and vibration inside a wine storage space.

elocating the Condenser - Residential Wine Cellar Cooling Aliso Viejo CAAlthough the condensing unit can be located indoors (such as the attic or garage space), wine cellar cooling installation specialists recommend locating the unit outdoors, where it can receive proper ventilation.  Since these indoor spaces have a tendency to gather heat throughout the summer months, placing the condensing unit in one of these areas can lead to a compressor failure and bring serious consequences to expensive wine collections.

This recently finished wine cellar cooling installation Aliso Viejo CA project demonstrates the importance of providing a well-ventilated space for condensers.  The project involved replacing an existing condensing unit that was damaged due to exposure to extremely high temperature levels.

The condensing part of the residential wine cellar cooling system was originally located in the garage, which had a temperature reaching up to 100 degrees in the summer.

The heat emanating from the garage space reduced the chilling capacity of the condensing unit, causing a warm wine storage environment in the process.

Condensing Unit Wine Cellar Cooling Installation Aliso Viejo CA

Upon initial inspection by Arctic Metalworks, the refrigeration component was discovered to be overheating.

To keep the condenser perpetually cool, the Arctic team suggested moving the unit to the side yard.

The Arctic wine cellar cooling installation Aliso Viejo CA team fabricated angle brackets to hold the residential wine cellar cooling system in place.

After anchoring the angle mounts to the walk, the condensing unit was removed from the carport and secured to the brackets in the yard.  Two additional copper tubes were attached to the existing line set, which is located in the garage space.

After completing all copper and electrical wiring connections, the Arctic wine cellar cooling installation team attached a rain shield to the residential wine cellar cooling unit to protect the compressor against elements, and recharged the system with R134a refrigerant.  Starting and testing the system allowed the Arctic team to detect a compressor malfunction.

The existing condenser had to be replaced with a new one; it failed due to the high heat in the garage space.  The Arctic wine cellar cooling installation team came back a few days later to replace the outside half of the split refrigeration unit with a brand new 1/3 hp Arctic 0033 split system.  The wine room climate control system is now in perfect working condition, and the client is very happy with the result of the wine cellar cooling installation Aliso Viejo CA project.

When building commercial and residential wine cellars, it is important to integrate the proper support infrastructure (such as insulation, vapor barriers, and an exterior grade entryway door) into the wine cellar design, to ensure that the wine cellar environment remains stable and tightly sealed.  A carefully constructed wine enclave will not only create the best climate conditions for storing and aging wines, but also allow wine cellar refrigeration systems to provide optimum cooling performance.

Arctic Metalworks specializes in wine cellar refrigeration systems, for both commercial and residential wine cellars.  This family owned and operated business is committed to manufacturing and supplying top quality wine cellar climate control systems, backed by a team of refrigeration specialists dedicated to providing exceptional service and professionalism.

To keep your wine collection safe, you need to have a wine storage solution built. Your wine storage solution does not have to be dull and boring. Your wine storage space can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. One way you can make a wine cellar more interesting is by choosing a beautiful wine racking system. One of the most elegant wine racking systems in Vancouver, Canada is Vintage View Wine Racks

A Residential Wine Cellar is a Basic Need for Wine Collectors

In the past, wine was something that only the rich could acquire. More specifically, only those with royal blood could enjoy wine on a regular basis. But these days, almost everybody has easy access to wine, and what’s more, almost anyone can start their own wine collection. If you are one of those who wish to start their own wine collection, you need think about having a place to keep it. Wines are very delicate, and they need to be stored in very specific temperature and humidity levels in order for them to remain at a good quality. There are various ways you can store wine, but the most ideal storage solution in Vancouver, Canada, is a residential custom wine cellar.

Designing Your Wine Cellar to Stand Out

As more and more people in Vancouver, Canada are starting their own wine collection, many of them are having wine cellars built. More specifically, they are having their wine cellars constructed in their own homes. Since a lot of homes now have their own residential wine cellar, it is a challenge for new wine collectors to make their wine cellar stand out from the rest. One way to make a home custom wine cellar unique is by choosing what kind of wine racks to install. One of the most unique and beautifully designed wine racking systems is the Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racking System by Blue Grouse Wine Cellars.

What are Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racks?

There are many kinds of wine racking systems in Canada. They vary in sizes, shapes, designs, and materials. One of the most beautiful types of wine racking systems is the Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racking System. This kind of wine rack allows wine bottle labels to be visible, because the bottles are positioned horizontally, unlike in the traditional wine racking setup wherein only the wine corks can be seen. Also, what makes Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racks a great option is that they are built in such a way that they can be stacked or cut for the perfect fit in almost any wine storage solution.

Wine Cellar Construction Project with Vintage View Wine Racks Installed

Blue Grouse Wine Cellars is one of the leading companies in Vancouver, Canada, that designs and builds effective, durable, and beautiful wine cellars, both for residential and commercial purposes. One of Blue Grouse’s most recent projects is a contemporary looking home wine cellar built in Vancouver, Canada.

The area in the client’s home to be turned into a residential wine cellar was an L-shaped room. One of the biggest challenges faced in this project was the limited space, and Blue Grouse dealt with this by renovating the entire room and created inset cubbies. These inset cubbies were built into the room’s wall; the wine racks were placed in these cubbies. The wine racks were made to be even with the cubbies, and did not stick out past the depth of the walls.

One of the best features in this residential wine cellar is the wine racking system that was installed. Blue Grouse Wine Cellars mounted Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racks, with brush nickel finish applied. The racks in this particular wine cellar were 3 bottles deep. Although you may choose from 1-bottle to 3-bottles deep options with Vintage View Wine Racks, all three options vary slightly in price. Since their prices aren’t very different from each other, most wine enthusiasts choose to have their wine racking system at 3-bottles deep, so that they can opt to expand their collection should they want to in the future. The racks in this home wine cellar were front-loaded, but should the wine collection expand, each rack still has 2 more wine bottle slots available.

At the corner of the residential custom wine cellar room, a little display area was included. Wooden cases can be placed in this display area.

Vintage View Wine Racks by Blue Grouse Wine Cellars

Blue Grouse Wine Cellars is one of the primary suppliers of Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racks in Vancouver, Canada. Vintage View Wine Racks come in various custom color options, that range from satin black to brushed nickel standard finishes. Compared to other types of wine racking systems, Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racks provide more bottle density and offer a safer wine storage solution because of their rugged steel design.

Vintage View Wine Racks are built in such a way that air can flow through the racks around each wine bottle, and evenly distribute the wine cellar’s cool temperature to every bottle. This design feature makes Vintage View Wine Racks ideal for long term wine storage.

Compared to standard wine racking systems, Vintage View Wine Racks are relatively easy to install. But if you prefer to have a professional install them for you, Blue Grouse offers installation services for these racks too. Their installation services are available for customers who are within the Vancouver lower mainland area. Vintage View Wine Racks are also relatively easy to maintain, and can last a very long time if maintained properly. Blue Grouse offers a limited lifetime guarantee for their Vintage View Wall Mounted Wine Racking System.

Blue Grouse supplies Vintage View Wine Racks outside of the US and has them manufactured abroad. Clients in Canada will incur freight charges, as well as duty and brokerage fees, on top of the racking system’s selling price. Blue Grouse makes these wine racks less costly by importing them in bulk quantities, and keeping them in their warehouses located in North Vancouver, BC.

Although Blue Grouse is based in Canada, they have clients in the United States, and these clients have their Vintage View Wine Racks shipped directly from the supplier in order to avoid import fees. A shipping charge will apply, which will be quoted depending on the client’s location.

Custom Wine Cellar Yorba Lina CA by Coastal with Wine Cellar Refrigeration by Arctic
.

Hello!

I’d like to take you on a short video tour of a custom wine cellar Yorba Linda CA project recently completed by Coastal Custom Wine Cellars.

The project is located in Orange County, Yorba Linda, California, actually.

We partnered with Arctic Metalworks who provided the wine cellar refrigeration components for the enclosure; and, we also partnered with David Lincoln Construction who provided all the general contractor services.

The Original Wine Storage Area - Yorba Linda

The Original Wine Storage Area – Yorba Linda

So, as you can see we had a small niche to work within this home.  This is about roughly eight-foot wide, I believe eight-foot tall and 30 inches deep.

I’ll take you to a series of photographs that will show you the progress as we move forward towards completion and I’ll also take you on a tour of our three-dimensional design package that’s offered to everyone who visits Coastal.

As you can see, we had a niche here; we took this particular niche, we demoed it, we sealed the area to protect the home from dust.

Before this beautiful brick veneer was placed on the walls, behind the walls we have our vapor barrier, our insulation, all the electrical was roughed in as well as the mechanical line set, the refrigeration lines and the condensate drain line.

Wine Cellar Refrigeration Yorba Linda CA Installation

Now, this particular enclosure called for a split wine cellar refrigeration system.

So, outside the wine enclosure is a remote condenser; inside the wine enclosure is your fan coil, cold air supply and the cold air return.

This also has a remote LED controller or thermostat, that one can monitor the temperature inside the wine cellar.

The Wine Cellar Design

Let’s take a look at the actual wine cellar design.

Once we have a consultation with the customer to determine how many bottles they want to display, some of the features that they want to include in the display, we created a three-dimensional wine cellar design package.

This is an overhead view of the small area.  Actually, it’s just under 6 feet wide, 28 inches deep and the height is just under 8-foot and 94 inches.

The Wine Cellar Design Yorba Linda Project

The total bottle capacity for the enclosure: 392 bottles.

So, let’s take a look at the elevation itself.

As you can see, from the side view here on the right of the bottom half is double-deep, which means you can place the bottle into an opening, push it to the back of the component and place another bottle in front of that; and, we used, on the top portion above the countertop level, a single-deep storage and display area.

So, at the left is the tabletop area while they set things down while managing the wines or opening the bottles of wine.

The Wine Racks

Custom Wine Racks

So, we’ll start from the bottom.  All of the wine racks rest on an inch and a half toe-kick which elevates the components off the floor, of course.

Now, we’ll use a beautiful base trim as well as a crown molding at the top.

To the far left and to the far right we’ve got bin storage or bulk storage for case locks, ordered or flanked to either side of this beautiful diamond bin, we’ve got a single column, single vertical column, or single bottle storage.

Above that, more single bottle storage with a high reveal display row and to the far left and to the far right the folks wanted a cabinet for some liquors, glasses, even small drawers for accoutrements such as cork screws and napkins.

This area just above the arch area is a lattice grill box with an operable grill cover.  This is what’s concealing the mechanical appearance of the fan coil that we looked at a few moments ago.

With that said, we’ll look into some of these different features here that we spoke of.

These are the small cabinets to the left and to the right and the drawer here, and the high reveal display row.

This is the square bins on the left and the single bottle, or single vertical column, I spoke of as well as the diamond bins and the beautiful front view of the area.

This wine cellar’s entire front was a seamless glass entry door, which turned out quite beautiful.

Thank you for visiting Coastal Custom Wine Cellars.

Blue Grouse Wine Rack Installation Project in Surrey, BC

One of the most recent and successfully completed projects by Blue Grouse Wine Cellars is the wine storage solution in Surrey, BC. In this project, the client was a contractor, building a spec home. Spec homes are built not for any specific owner, and because of this, the contractor wanted to make sure that this house looked as good as possible without spending a lot of money. They decided on modular wine racking; the best solution to achieve the beautiful but budget-friendly design.

Modular Wine Racks: What Are They?

There are many types of wine racks in Vancouver, Canada, and modular wine racks are a few of the most sought-after types. Modular wine racking is a popular choice, because clients can pick from an unlimited combination of rack modules. Clients can mix and match these module options, to achieve a wine rack design that fits their preference. Because of this, modular wine racking allows wine collectors to reconfigure and expand their wine racking structure, and create more storage space to accommodate their continually growing wine collection.

Modular wine racks in Canada come in various sizes, materials, and designs. With this wide array of options, creating a personalized wine storage design is easy, because wine collectors can just pair their choice of modular wine rack kits to meet their specific wine cellar needs. Blue Grouse Wine Cellars offers clients an extensive list of modular wine racking systems options. Clients can assemble basic building blocks, join them together, and create unique wine racks that may be big, small, or extravagant.

The Design of the Modular Wine Racking System in Surrey, BC

The modular wine rack installed by Blue Grouse in the wine storage solution in Surrey, BC was a unique combination of kits. It had very interesting features, that, all together, made the wine cellar look elegant and classy. The wine racking system’s features includes:

1. An Archway Feature

The modular wine racking system’s design included a lovely archway feature. This feature was the only slightly customized feature of the residential wine cellar. It was included in the design to give the wine storage room a little bit of flare.

2. Countertop Feature

The client wanted the future home owners to have a flat surface to use to sort out and organize the wines in their collection, and so a countertop feature was included in the wine cellar’s design. For illustration purposes, a wine bottle was placed on the countertop in this photo.

3. Combined Modular Wine Racking

The wine racking in this project was 7 feet tall, which is the standard height for all wine racks made by Blue Grouse Wine Cellars. To make the design of this home wine cellar in Surrey, BC more interesting, the wine racking used was a combination of modules.

a. Wine Racks with Individual Bottle Slots

The first type of wine rack module included in this wine cellar was comprised of standard wine racks that could accommodate individual wine bottles. These wine racks cater to standard sized wine bottles.

b. Diamond Bins Module

Diamond X bins are the second type of wine racks in the Surrey wine cellar. These racks accommodate large sized wine bottles. Diamond bins also have removable slats, which the homeowners can opt to remove if they want to increase the storage capacity, or if they want to fit in some small wood cases.

Blue Grouse recommends that their clients store the same types of wine bottles in one bin, so that their collection is conveniently organized. They won’t need to pull bottles from the bottom of the bin, and thus, avoid moving the wine too often.

4. Display Row

Once the combined modules were stuck together, the area in the middle that connected all of them became the display row. This display row tilted the wine bottles at a 15 degree angle, which was adequate to keep wine corks moist, while allowing the labels to be visible.

5. Wine Cellar Lighting

Wine Cellar Lighting Fixtures

Rope lighting was included in the wine racking. The lighting started inside the archway and carried on through the display row. The lighting added a beautiful dramatic effect to the wine racking design.

A lamp was also included, as seen in this photo. The lamp uses LED lighting, a type of lighting that does not generate too much heat, and does not consume much electricity.

6. Curved Corners

Another feature that made the design of this Surrey wine cellar more interesting were the curved corners, made of individual bottle slot wine racks.

Beautiful and Durable Wood Used for the Wine Racks

The modular wine racks in this residential wine cellar in Surrey, BC were made from All Heart California Redwood. This type of wood is harvested from the middle part of the Redwood tree. Its distinct characteristic is a consistent reddish color all through out.

A wine cabinet refrigeration unit manufactured by US Cellar Systems was installed. Learn more about the wine cellar cooling system installation project by M&M Cellar Systems.

Cooling Systems for Wine Cabinets

Wine is a beverage that has to be kept in a temperature-controlled environment in order for its quality to be preserved, and for its flavored be allowed to develop tastefully. This is why all wine collections need to be stored in a room or cellar with wine cabinets, and to have a wine cellar cooling unit installed. You can’t have just any wine cellar refrigeration unit installed in your wine storage room. You need to determine the appropriate wine cellar cooling unit to meet the specific storage requirements of your wine cellar.

A residential wine cellar is ideal for the wine enthusiast, because having the wine room in your own home makes organizing and managing the wine collection easier. But, there are cases wherein there isn’t enough space in a wine collector’s house for a wine cellar to be constructed. The next best option is to install wine cabinets with a good refrigeration system.

A good wine cabinet cooling system is one of the most important parts of a wine cabinet. Without it, a wine cabinet cannot provide the necessary conditions for optimum wine aging and storage.

One of M&M Cellar Systems’ noteworthy projects was the installation of a wine cabinet cooling unit in Beverly Hills, California. More specifically, the cooling unit installed was a HS 6600 System, manufactured by US Cellar Systems. This wine cabinet refrigeration unit model is under US Cellar System’s High Static (HS) Series of cooling systems.

US Cellar System Products

HS Series by US Cellar Systems

HS Systems are a type of wine cooling system built to provide the right circulation of air in storage with narrow spaces. They are also split-type wine cooling systems, which means that the evaporators and condensers can be placed far from each other. HS Series cooling systems have evaporators that are so powerful that they can be installed as far as 25 feet away from the wine storage room. This configuration also means that this cooling unit does not create noise in the wine room.

Split-type cooling systems can either be ducted or ductless. HS Series wine cabinet cooling systems are the ducted type. This means that cooled air passes through a duct and into the wine storage room.

US Cellar uses R134a refrigerant in all the HS models. The evaporators in these cooling unit models have capacities that range from 1,800 to 20,000 BTU/hour.

For the Beverly Hills wine cabinet, Mario Morales, the owner and lead technician of M&M Wine Cellar Cooling Systems, determined the appropriate wine cabinet cooling unit by calculating the heat load from the wine room’s details and dimensions. He also considered the type and location of construction. Consequently, he installed an HS 6600 wine cabinet refrigeration unit in the Beverly Hills wine cabinet. The HS 6600 model is a high static ducted unit. This wine refrigeration unit model includes a piping set, for moving liquid and gaseous refrigerant to the wine cabinets.

The HS 6600 model, a split type high static wine cabinet cooling system, was installed in the client’s wine cabinet, located in his Beverly Hills house’s living room. The installation of the cooling system involved charging it with Freon, a refrigerant that is commonly used in air conditioning. Mr. Morales also did a pressure test on the refrigeration system after it was charged with Freon. A pressure reading is done in order to check for leaks inside and outside the cooling system. Additionally, although US Cellar Systems is a reliable manufacturer of quality units, this pressure testing is standard operating procedure done by HVAC installation professional, and helps make sure that the wine cabinet refrigeration unit can handle the pressure declared by the unit’s manufacturer.

Only Trust the Professionals

This wine cabinet cooling unit installation project is one of the many successful projects of M&M Cellar Systems. In order to make sure they provide their customers with utmost satisfaction, they make sure that they use only products manufactured by the best in the industry. Chevis Residential Wine Cellar Design Drawing

Traditional, original, and totally functional, describes the Chevis home wine cellar. We started with the drawing. Each elevation is designated with a letter – elevations A, B, C, and D. The overhead view shows our first challenge.

A duct for the air conditioning system to the adjoining room was found in a wall space that we removed on the left to make our space wider. To use the space, we needed to make the ducting as inconspicuous as possible.

We built custom ducting, making it shallower but wider, and as close to the ceiling as possible. We framed around it. We designed the room with curved corners on a double-deep section of the lower back wall, allowing a tabletop across the entire back.

Chevis wine cellar hidden ductingElevation A is the left wall. Here you can see where we added a solid wood piece in front of the hidden ducting. We added a hand-carved grapevine design at the front. The rest of the wall is individual racking for 750 size bottles, along with a row high-reveal display.

Dimmable lighting was installed above the display. A rail for the ladder is shown in the upper area. It is attached to a 4-inch solid wood panel. We used 4-inch crown molding, and standard 1 ½-inch base molding.

Elevation B is the back wall. The solid horizontal display rows of the top center are large enough to store magnum bottles. The solid arch includes the puck light. LED lighting is also above the display rows on each side of the arch.

Chevis wine cellar back wall

Chevis Wine Cellar Back Wall with Diamond Bins and Case Storage

Double-deep solid diamond bins are included just below the tabletop. The case storage is on rolling shelves, the right to our double-deep, and the left to single-deep.

Here was another challenge: at the back of this wall, a vent protruding through the floor to the exterior of the back wall. We built a wooden wall around this as well, and hid it behind the left case storage. The ladder rail goes across at the top, attaching to the 4-inch solid section.

Chevis wine rackingElevation C is the right wall. The fan coil or evaporator for the ductless split wine cooling system sits behind the grill cover and box at the top of this wall. Another ladder rail, individual 750 bottle storage, and a high-reveal display row with lighting, make up the rest of this wall.

Elevation D has the two half-high curved corners that sit on top of the tabletop. A curved display row with lighting is included in this wine rack.

Here are the 3D photos of the room. This is the overhead, the left and back wall; the back wall, and right wall; the custom-designed door with surround; and the full wine cellar view from the front.

Converting of a Small Restaurant Wine Storage Space into a Beautiful Vancouver Commercial Wine Cellar

Written by

commercial wine cellar Salam BombaySales growth in a restaurant business can be challenging, but is not impossible to achieve. If you sell wine in your restaurant, it is important to dedicate your time and effort in creating an attractive modern wine display. Find out how a Vancouver restaurant with a small wine storage space was converted into a beautiful and effective commercial wine cellar that will surely bring increased revenue and profits for this business.

Commercial Wine Displays Contribute to Profit Generation

A boring presentation of wine means that your restaurant is losing money; it’s losing money in potential wine sales, a huge part of a restaurants profitability.  In addition to great food, excellent service and quality wines, the way you display your bottles matters a lot.

Beautiful commercial wine displays is one of the keys to achieving increases in wine sales. You’re not going to encourage customers to purchase your wine if you keep the bottles in the corner of your restaurant, on boring shelves or standard cabinets.

commercial wine displayOn the other hand, making an effort to make your storage display as stunning as possible is an effective strategy in drawing people’s attention.

A restaurant with good wine presentation will tell customers that you have excellent wines to offer, as well as provide them a relaxing atmosphere while they’re eating their favorite meal.

For these reasons, many restaurants in Vancouver, Canada are investing in a climate-controlled commercial wine cellar. When designed and installed by an expert, your wine room will not only showcase your wines beautifully, but it will also maintain a stable environment for proper preservation of your vintages.

Having a well-built wine room in your restaurant creates a relaxing atmosphere for your customers, and allows you to provide quality wines, which will make your customers happy, and lead to increases in sales.

The Salam Bombay Wine Cellar Design

In Vancouver, British Columbia, you will find the Salam Bombay, an Indian restaurant that offers excellent food and great selection of wines.

The owner, Jose Madappilly, recently had his old wine storage system converted into a functional and appealing Vancouver restaurant wine cellar.

Located adjacent to the bar area, the wine storage area is small. The Champagne, reds, and whites were all displayed in modular wine racks, with some bottles stored vertically, and some on top of each other.

Although ideal for limited spaces, the modular wine racks were not perfect for a contemporary restaurant that aims to increase sales. They are plain and unnoticeable. So, the client talked to Blue Grouse Wine Cellars, and requested a more effective commercial wine storage solution that fits the small space.

The Modern Wine Racking

Modern Wine Racks from Vintage View

Small wine rooms are a challenge to builders. For this project, the room only measures 6 feet wide, 5 feet deep and 9 feet high. As always with limited spaces, Blue Grouse Wine Cellars designed a modern wine racking system that maximizes storage capacity.

Metal wine racks from Vintage View were installed. Floor-to-ceiling and wall-mounted racks were installed in the Salam Bombay wine cellar. Designed to fit narrow spaces, metal racks are in demand in restaurants and other commercial establishments. They also display wines like they are floating in the air, making the wine cellar look more elegant.

Prior to the conversion, the client used modular wine racks which stored the bottles on top of each other. With this bottle orientation, finding a specific vintage required removing one bottle after another to check the labels.

With the label-forward design of Vintage View metal wine racks, wine labels are not hidden. Locating and serving wine is not a difficult task anymore.

Custom wood components were incorporated in the racking. The display shelf was added to showcase the restaurant’s featured wines. A cabinet was also built by Blue Grouse to hide the cooling unit.

The Door and Walls

Glass-Enclosed Restaurant Wine Cellar

The owner wanted a frameless look in their commercial wine storage space. To achieve this, Blue Grouse used single-pane glass for the wall with the door. Other walls were constructed with insulated glass, except for the back wall, which is made of wood.

Glass enclosures are perfect for restaurant wine cellars because it gives your customers the opportunity to enjoy the commercial wine display visually from outside the storage room. It also creates an illusion of wider space.

The Cooling Equipment

In addition being unattractive, the restaurant’s old storage system was not cooled by a commercial-grade wine cooling unit.  The air conditioner used in the restaurant could not provide the wine the ideal temperature and humidity that would prevent their wine from being damaged.

The worst thing that can happen to a restaurant that sells wine is for a customer to buy a bad bottle or glass of wine from your restaurant. This will create a negative impact on your business’ reputation, and might make customers decide not to come back to your establishment again. Keep in mind also that wine presentation, quality, and service all contribute to customer satisfaction.

In this project, Blue Grouse used a wine cooling system suitable to the limited space intended for modern wine display. The self-contained refrigeration equipment is a product of ONAM, a brand of cooling units trusted by Vancouver commercial wine cellar builders, because of its efficiency, flexibility, and easy installation.

Written by

Do you think you can provide a proper wine storage space for your collection if you have a limited budget? The answer is YES! A reliable wine cellar builder can help you establish the appropriate budget for your project. Find out how a master builder in San Antonio helped their client build an affordable custom wine cellar.

budget for wine cellarYou can Have a Custom Home Wine Cellar on a Budget

Scared of going over their budget, some homeowners opt for cheap wine coolers, or wine refrigerators to store their wine.  But keep in mind that unlike wine cellars, these units cannot protect your wines intended for long-term aging. They are not designed to stabilize both the temperature and humidity required to maintain wine’s quality.

Although a bit more expensive, a climate-controlled custom home wine cellar is highly recommended for long-term storage. It is equipped with a refrigeration system that will protect wine from being damaged by temperature fluctuations and wrong humidity levels.

They approached Wine Cellar Specialists, believing in the company’s ability to complete the project successfully, while staying under budget, and meeting their aesthetic requirements.

Wine Cellar Specialists excel at this step in the design process, one of the reasons that their clients are always so thrilled with the end product.

To achieve the goals of the clients many important elements had to be planned for, elements you can be watching for when planning your custom wine room project. An expert building for wine storage will plan to insulate and cool the space specifically for wine cellars. They’ll take into account the custom features and racking options that best fit the particular client. All of these elements were accounted for in this San Antonio project.

Insulation

Philips Wine Cellar Insulation

Room insulation should not be taken for granted. Any room that will be equipped with a cooling system needs to be insulated before the installation of wine racks, flooring, and lighting. This will provide a seal to the room, preventing mold growth and other external factors that can ruin wine. Without the proper seal, you might spend more in the future due to the breakdown of your wine cooling unit, and high energy consumption.

For this project, the room was framed, and electrical components were added prior to the insulation of walls and ceilings using closed cell foam. Undesirable humidity and temperature fluctuations can be avoided if the vapor barrier and insulator are installed properly, leaving no gaps in the walls.

One of these is the waterfall display styled custom wine rack found on the left wall, which stores the bottles in a way that allows the labels to face up.

The solid diamond bins below it allow for bulk storage. This design is also perfect for storing large format and odd-shaped bottles.

Another custom feature of the wine room can be found on the right wall. The custom wine racking was designed to accommodate bottles individually, and allows for maximum airflow between bottles.

HS Systems are specifically manufactured with a design that will provide cooled air from medium or high-temperature spaces. They are also designed with a split-type refrigeration system.  It has very powerful evaporators that it is possible to install it as far as 25 feet from the cooling room.

These ducted wine coolers transport cool air to the wine storage room via ducts, which frees your storage room from noise and space compared to an in-room evaporator.

The HS models use the refrigerant R134a with a total evaporator capacity of up to 20,000 BTU/hour.

Mario was sure that HS 6600 was the perfect wine cellar cooling unit to be installed because of the room’s specifics, dimensions, type and location of construction.  The wine cellar cooling system Beverly Hills was also charged with a refrigerant, Freon, which is commonly utilized for air conditioning.

Moreover, Mario conducted a pressure test for the climate controlled wine cellar after charging it with Freon to make sure that there are no leaks inside and out and to ensure that the wine cellar refrigeration installation can handle the pressure declared by the climate controlled wine cellar manufacturer.
